Ice and freezing guide

What should I do if my air conditioning coil is frozen?

Ice is a symptom, not a repair. Continuing to cool or trying to remove it mechanically can cause damage and the melting water can affect the property.

Stop cooling and let the equipment thaw safely

Turn off cooling using the normal controller. Do not chip, scrape or heat the ice, and do not open fixed covers. Keep the area below the unit clear because thawing can release more water than the drain manages.

If water is approaching electrics, there is visible damage or controls cannot be used safely, isolate the system only where safe and obtain qualified help. Do not restart cooling merely because the visible ice has disappeared.

Why ice can form

Restricted airflow from dirty filters, fan problems or internal contamination can allow surfaces to become too cold. Sensor, control, refrigerant or operating-condition issues may also contribute. The visible location of ice alone does not prove the cause.

Refrigerant is not a consumable that should be routinely topped up. Suspected loss requires appropriately qualified investigation and any work must follow current F-gas requirements.

Diagnosis prevents a repeat

An engineer can assess filters and airflow, fan operation, operating temperatures, controls, drainage and the refrigeration circuit where necessary. This identifies why the coil froze rather than simply waiting for it to melt.

Can I break the ice off an air conditioner?

No. Chipping or scraping ice can damage delicate components. Stop cooling, keep the area safe and allow professional diagnosis.

Can I use the unit after the ice melts?

The cause may still be present and the unit may freeze again. It is sensible to have persistent or substantial icing investigated before normal use.

Does ice always mean low refrigerant?

No. Restricted airflow, fan, sensor and control issues are also possible. Measurements are needed to identify the actual cause.
