Stopping fault guide

Why does my air conditioning keep turning off?

Stopping is not always a fault: a system may cycle as demand changes. Repeated short runs, failed restarts or electrical tripping are different and need closer attention.

Rule out schedules and normal control

Check timers, weekly schedules, sleep modes, occupancy controls and app settings. Confirm the requested temperature is meaningfully different from the room temperature and that another controller is not changing the command.

Modern inverter equipment varies its output and may stop when little capacity is needed. Record the run time and room temperature rather than assuming every pause is abnormal.

Signs that point to a fault

Repeated starts and stops over very short periods, warning lights, error codes, poor airflow or a failure to restart can indicate a control, sensor, airflow, electrical or refrigeration issue. Outdoor-unit protection may also stop operation when a fault is detected.

If the circuit breaker or protective device trips, do not keep resetting it. A qualified person should establish why protection operated. Burning smells, heat damage or unusual electrical noise require the affected system to be isolated safely.

Give the engineer a useful timeline

Note how long the unit runs, the selected mode and temperature, any displayed code and whether other indoor units are affected. Mention recent power cuts, cleaning, building work or changes to schedules.

Top Local can investigate intermittent systems across Kent. Because the problem may not appear continuously, videos and an accurate sequence can save time while proper testing confirms the cause.

Is it normal for air conditioning to turn off?

It can be normal once the room reaches the set temperature or a schedule ends. Very short repeated cycling, error indications or lost comfort should be checked.

Why does it stop after a few minutes?

A timer, control setting, sensor, airflow problem or protective shutdown could be involved. Record the timing and any code for diagnosis.

Should I reset a tripped breaker repeatedly?

No. Repeated tripping indicates a problem that requires qualified investigation. Do not bypass or repeatedly reset electrical protection.
