New-build comfort

Air conditioning for new-build homes

Modern insulation and airtight construction can retain unwanted summer heat. Early planning creates more options for discreet routes and coordinated electrical work.

Why efficient homes can still overheat

Insulation helps reduce winter heat loss, but large glazing, limited shading, internal gains and restricted night ventilation can allow summer heat to build up. Bedrooms and upper floors may be particularly affected.

The assessment should consider actual glazing, orientation and room use rather than assuming every new home has the same demand.

Coordinate before finishes where possible

During construction, routes for refrigerant pipework, cabling and drainage can sometimes be planned before walls and ceilings are closed. Outdoor-unit bases and electrical supplies can also be coordinated.

All concealed work must remain suitable, testable and serviceable. Final equipment selection should reflect the completed building specification and manufacturer requirements.

Choose the rooms that need active control

Not every room must be conditioned. Bedrooms, home offices and highly glazed living areas may have the strongest need, with individual control allowing unused spaces to remain off.

A staged design can preserve options for later rooms. Discuss likely future expansion so initial outdoor positions and routes do not create unnecessary limitations.

Why does a well-insulated new home get hot?

Solar gain, airtightness, internal equipment and limited heat release can cause overheating even where winter efficiency is good.

Should air conditioning be planned before plastering?

Early coordination can improve routes and finishes, but the design still needs accurate room, glazing and construction information.

Do all bedrooms need separate units?

Only rooms requiring reliable independent control need their own solution. The usage pattern and layout should guide the design.
