Installer checklist

How to choose an air conditioning installer

A good installation is more than attaching equipment to a wall. The installer should be able to explain the design, legal competence, scope and support clearly.

Check competence and certification

Stationary air-conditioning work involving F-gases is regulated. Ask who will carry out the refrigerant work and request the relevant personnel and company certification details where applicable. Current official guidance is available from the Environment Agency and GOV.UK.

Certification is essential, but it is not the only quality signal. The survey should still consider heat load, equipment positions, drainage, electrical work and access for future servicing.

Expect a clear written proposal

The quotation should identify the equipment, rooms, main routes and work included. It should distinguish assumptions, exclusions, optional work and payment terms. Applicable manufacturer and workmanship warranty details should be available before commitment.

Be cautious with a price that cannot be connected to a survey or a clear design. Photographs can help with an early conversation, but they rarely show every load, access and routing issue.

Ask about the finished experience

Discuss protection of the working area, making good, waste removal, commissioning and control demonstration. A professional installation should be tested and explained, with the property left tidy.

Aftercare matters too. Ask how servicing, faults and warranty questions are handled. Top Local is led by Alexander Hatzidakis, an F-Gas-certified installer who works directly with his team across Kent and the South East.

Common questions

Why does F-gas certification matter?

It demonstrates the required competence for regulated work involving fluorinated refrigerants. The exact personnel and company requirements depend on the work and equipment.

Should I accept a quote without a survey?

For a fixed installation, a survey normally provides the information needed to confirm sizing, positions, routes, access and electrical scope.

What warranty questions should I ask?

Ask separately about equipment and workmanship cover, duration, conditions, servicing requirements and who handles a claim.

What Happens During an Air Conditioning Survey?

A good survey turns a general request for cooling or heating into a workable design. It should answer how the rooms are used and how the equipment can be installed neatly.
